ASHOKA & BUDDHISM Ashoka was one of India's most famous emperors from about 272 to 235 B.C. He began as a violent leader, but gave up shedding blood and began to spread the word about Buddhism, a non-violent religion. Almost no information exists about the details of Buddha's life. Scholars agree that such a man lived in northern India during the 500's and 400's B.C. Buddha's followers spread the story of his life, which is important to the religion. GUPTA DYNASTY & HINDUISM The Guptas took over after Ashoka's death and introduced Hinduism. Hinduism represents a diverse group of beliefs, practices, and texts that have developed over thousands of years. There are over a billion practicing Hindus in India. |
